Burundi: Where are we with the resumption of cooperation between the power of Gitega and the European Union?

Burundi: Where are we with the resumption of cooperation between the power of Gitega and the European Union?
The question deserves to be asked because the pace of negotiations on which was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation supported by the power of Evariste Ndayishimiye was to the point that the Burundians were already beginning to have hope that the European Union would begin to release money for Burundi, thus putting an end to 5 years of economic blockade. The question also deserves an answer because the Burundians waited for a favourable answer but in vain. Evariste Ndayishimiye and Albert Shingiro should tell Burundians where the blockage is; which caused the EU countries to start at some point to put the hand brake in this move towards normalization of relations.
If there is no clear answer to this question, public opinion is bound to wonder what really happened. All the public saw was the letter that 43 MEPs sent to Joseph Borell Fontelles, EU High Representative in charge of relations with other countries, on February 5, 2021, to let him know that it is unacceptable to normalize relations with Burundi as long as the conditions of respect for human rights are not respected
Many comments on social media from Gitega’s power communications services, and especially from Willy Nyamitwe, seemed to convince the public that this figure of 43 MEPs is insignificant compared to the total number of MEPs. Maybe he thought it was like being at home in parliament where only raised hands count; some representatives of the people who cannot read or write do not even know the content of what they are voting for. Elsewhere, even one has a say and he is listened to carefully and his ideas are discussed for constructive lessons.
We recall that on February 2, 2021, the Burundian ministry in charge of external relations initiated a political dialogue with the delegation of the European Union in Burundi. The two delegations returned to the mechanisms for normalizing relations, an opportunity to initiate “mutually beneficial political dialogue,” according to the final statement. Reading the opening speech, Mr. Shingiro approached more in the sense of mutual forgiveness. “Our hobbyhorse is dialogue with Burundi’s bilateral and multilateral partners, so that the disputes of the past are definitively emptied,” he said, quoting the head of state Évariste Ndayishimiye. He added “These misunderstandings must definitely be resolved, this time to face the present and the future with confidence and serenity.” Some interesting quotes: “…. However, we do not have the right to drag our feet in this process of dialogue. We must take our feet off the ground, in order to conclude our dialogues as soon as possible. The peoples of our respective countries are watching us right now. We therefore have a duty to achieve a good result. If we succeed, it will be a shared success and if we fail in the same way, it will be a shared failure but I must say that this last scenario is almost impossible… ”, recalled the one who has spent the last five years at the UN. to openly hate the EU … ” The minister was convinced of the will of both parties.
Claude Bochu, EU Ambassador to Burundi welcomed the idea of the meeting. “The main thing is the path, it is kind of the very concept of this political dialogue. It’s something that exists in a normal relationship. The partners see each other and discuss various subjects. Where there is a will, there is a way, ”he insisted.
Europeans are not fooled. The same of February 2, 2021, the Supreme Court of Burundi made public the trial of 34 personalities accused of attempted the failed coup of 2015. All were sentenced to life imprisonment with heavy almonds to be paid to the State, to Rema FM and to individuals. The court says the sentence was handed down on June 23, 2020.
That’s not all. The 27 European countries had recommended, as a sign of openness and good will to respect human rights, to release political prisoners before the end of last year 2020. President Ndayishimiye promised it, he l ‘even announced, but the implementation was zero. The EU is said to have even asked Evariste Ndayishimiye to share power with others, especially members of the opposition party, CNL of Agathon Rwasa, which was proclaimed second by the CENI after the elections as he shouts loudly. and strong until today that he had won the elections of May 2020. Nothing has been done on the side of the power of Gitega. Instead, Ndayishimiye has excluded members of the opposition from all spheres of life in the country, and over 99% of senior positions are held by members of the cnddfdd alone.
Human rights violations have never ceased in Burundi. Enforced disappearances, arbitrary imprisonment, corpses of unidentified people hastily buried by the cnddfdd administration, so many signs that Evariste Ndayishimiye is not ready for an improvement in respect of human rights and therefore in terms of relations with other states, even starting with direct neighbours (except at his daddy Magufuli)
URN HITAMWONEZA once again alerts the Burundian people to stand up in time to prevent the current leaders from isolating our country from the regional and international scene because it is the Burundians, the little citizens, who will suffer first. The children of the military clique in power are all in Europe and they continue to plunder the few resources that are left in the country when our children are starving, have no medicine and cannot find school fees; even those who go to school study in poor conditions and have no future. It is up to us to react in time to put them out of harm’s way without delay. WhatsApp contact: +31685638237
