History-Informed Politics: The Only Path to Lasting Peace and Genuine Justice

Introduction: History as a Guiding Light for Politics

History is not just a record of the past; it is an essential guide for understanding the present and shaping the future. Politics informed by history helps prevent repeating past mistakes and allows societies to build justice and lasting peace. Ignoring history is like navigating blindly, as current conflicts in Europe and Africa demonstrate.

Russia and Ukraine: History Used for Political Justification

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, marking a major escalation of the conflict that began in 2014. By 2025, Russia occupies significant portions of eastern Ukraine, including Donetsk, Luhansk, and parts of Kharkiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that Russia and Ukraine share ancient roots in the “Kievan Rus” and uses this historical link to justify military actions. However, this interpretation ignores Ukraine’s modern political reality as a sovereign nation with a distinct identity.

The past thus becomes a pretext, and the present becomes a demonstration of power. Understanding historical roots is essential before making political decisions; ignoring the past leads to prolonged conflicts and unnecessary suffering.

Africa: The Challenges of a Misunderstood History

Africa faces numerous challenges rooted in its history, particularly in the Great Lakes region and other multicultural areas:

  • Arbitrarily drawn colonial borders fragmented societies and created enduring tensions.
  • Political parties and leaders often prioritized ethnicity over an accurate understanding of history, perpetuating divisions.
  • Religious ideologies were sometimes used to reinforce power structures, leaving behind distorted narratives and biases.

These factors have resulted in fragmented societies, internal conflicts, and political crises, often without the population fully understanding the underlying historical causes. Knowledge of history is critical to guide political decisions, build inclusive institutions, and ensure lasting peace.

Lessons from History for Informed Politics

Current conflicts in Ukraine and Africa show that history must inform political decisions. A history-informed approach allows policymakers to:

  • Understand the roots of conflicts: Identify deep causes to address tensions sustainably.
  • Promote reconciliation: Recognize past injustices and work toward justice and reparations.
  • Build inclusive institutions: Ensure all communities are represented in political and social structures.
  • Encourage regional cooperation: Foster collaboration among neighboring countries to prevent conflicts.
